With regards to classification, kratom is unlike most herbs. For the majority of plants, categories are almost always straightforward, even for hybrid strains. However, for kratom, such categorization occurs on two levels. Kratom strains are first, categorized according to the color of the vein of the leaves as at the harvest period as well as storage conditions. Secondly, kratom strains are categorized by location. For a full explanation, we have to consider both levels of classification.
1. Color of Leaf vein
Like the leaves of many plants, kratom leaves change color at different stages of their maturity. One advantage of kratom is that the plant does not need to be fully mature before the leaves are harvested. That said; the colors by which kratom strains are classified maybe three, or four, depending on your source of information. The three main strains are white, red, and green. There is another, a newer class of strains of yellow-veined kratom leaves as well.Related Post: What Exactly is Kratom?
White-veined kratom strains: this is what you get when the kratom leaves are harvested at the early stages of their maturity: white-veined leaves. Upon harvesting, these leaves must be stored and dried indoors, in a dark place.
Green-veined kratom strains: the leaves of this strain must have been harvested mid-growth. The leaves are first stored and drying indoors, and later on, taken outdoors to complete the drying process.
Red-veined kratom strains: you would get this from fully-matured kratom plants. The leaves must be dried outside, for sunlight. Or if dried indoors, artificial UV light must be made available.
Yellow-veined kratom strains: the newest and the least popular of the pack. Yellow-veined strains are thought to be hybrids of any of the former strains or gotten from leaves of kratom leaves, post-maturity.
2. Cultivation Attributes
When you come across kratom strains, they are not merely named according to their color. The stand-out attribute of its cultivation is included, most prominent of which is location. For instance, there is the Red Bali kratom strain, one of the most popular strains around. From the name, one can deduce that this strain is from fully-matured kratom plants grown in Bali. Some of the most popular names you would read about include Bali, Borneo, Indo, Maeng Da, Vietnam, Elephant, Dragon, etc. We would proceed to examine each one of them.
Bali kratom: this strain comes from the prominent Indonesian island of Bali, which is a major tourist center in the Southeast Asian region. However, the plants may not necessarily be grown in Bali; they may actually come from other locations within the region. They are so-named because of the Bali port through which they are transported.
Borneo kratom: this kratom comes from the tropical forests on the island of Borneo, which lies between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Borneo is the third-largest island in the world as well as the largest Asian island.
Indo kratom: this is the class of every other kratom plants sourced from Indonesia. Hence, the name, Indo. Indonesia is indeed the country most prominent for kratom.
Vietnam kratom: Vietnam kratom is the most popular kratom that originates from outside Indonesia, being cultivated, instead, in the forests along the Bassac River, which is located just outside Long Xuyen, a major Vietnamese city. Some of these kratom plants are also cultivated along the Vietnamese region of the Mekong River.
Elephant kratom: unlike other strains of kratom named after their location, Elephant Kratom is named after a prominent feature of the plant: its massive drooping leaves, which resemble an elephant’s ears. Such plants are scarce and are only found deep in the Sumatra island in Indonesia.
Malay kratom: from its name, this obviously refers to kratom gotten from the forests of Malaysia. The Super Green Malay is the most popular strain from this category.
Maeng Da kratom: this kratom strain is not naturally occurring, unlike the others. Instead, it is created by the process of grafting. The purpose of this is to have a kratom plant that combines qualities from other strains. An ancient strain, it seems to have Thai origins.
