What’s the Best Kratom to Buy?

Kratom had only just made its way into the United States a few years ago and the market is growing. Before we Americans contacted kratom, the plant has enjoyed a rich history though being mostly limited to its native origin. Kratom is otherwise known as Mitragyna speciosa. The kratom plant comes from Southeast Asia and is native to such countries as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and a couple of others. The one paramount question among people considering kratom is: what’s the best kratom to buy? The best answer is to provide the list of organic kratom strains there are, and allow the person to choose one that fits them best.

Kratom Strains

Kratom leaves have different features and produce different effects depending on how mature they were at harvest. The most recognizable of these features is the color of the veins of the leaves. This may be white, red, or green, corresponding to the three major divisions of kratom strains. The veins of kratom leaves are, at first, white, then green, and finally, red. And that’s how the main strains of kratom were gotten: white, green, and red. Also, each of these strains has different conditions for storage and processing. And besides that, they have varying alkaloid content; the alkaloids in kratom, particularly Mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine, determine the effect each type will have. Note anyway, that there is a fourth, emerging strain, known as Yellow (or gold) kratom.

White-veined kratom strains:

Kratom leaves have white veins when they are at the early stages of their maturity. When they are harvested at this stage, they are referred to as white-veined kratom strains. Usually, the leaves of this strain are stored and dried indoors, where it’s dark. White Kratom strains have a higher amount of alkaloid mitragynine and less of 7-hydroxy mitragynine, compared to the other two major strains.

Green-veined kratom strains:

As kratom leaves age, the white veins give way for green veins, matching the full color of the leaves. Kratom leaves at this stage have not fully matured yet but they are not premature either. These mid-growth kratom leaves have a two-stage drying process. First, they are stored and dried indoors, away from sunlight. Soon afterward, they are taken outside to dry under full sunlight, completing the drying process.

Red-veined kratom strains:

Leaves of fully matured kratom plants have red veins. These leaves can be stored and dried indoors or outdoors as the producer wishes, but UV (ultraviolet) light must be available. If dried outdoors, the light from the sun is enough. If stored indoors, then one has to make use of artificial UV light.

Yellow-veined kratom strains:

Yellow-veined kratom strains are the newest and least popular kratom strains. Some think that the leaves of kratom plants in this stage were harvested when the plant is post-maturity and the leaves have turned yellow. However, that is not always the case. Usually, yellow-veined kratom strains are not literally named, but instead are used to refer to hybrids of other strains.  Besides these main strains of kratom, there are other strains that are determined by cultivation attributes. The combination of both factors (leaf vein color and plant attribute) form the naming convention for kratom products. For instance, a ‘Red Bali’ kratom product would be a red-veined strain of kratom produced in Bali island.

Here are some of the most common kratom strains by cultivation attributes:

  • Bali

Perhaps the most popular kratom, a title fitting of a strain originating from the most popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia. Bali kratom does not necessarily refer to kratom cultivated in Bali alone. Others are cultivated in surrounding regions. But since Bali is the main export for kratom in the area, they are all called Bali kratom.
  • Borneo

This kratom strain is named for Borneo, the third-largest island in the world and the largest in Asia. This massive island, from which forests the kratom is sourced stretches over the three countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
  • Thai

This refers to the general Thailand strain of kratom. It is typically more expensive than the Red Dragon, which is also sourced from Thailand. Not all Thai kratom is grown in Thailand exactly though. Sometimes, they are cultivated in other areas from seeds gotten in Thailand.
  • Vietnam

This is the most popular kratom coming from outside Indonesia. All kratom strains cultivated in this tiny country are named Vietnam kratom. Most of the plants come from a small region though. That’s the forest along the Basic River, flowing on the outskirts of Long Xuyen, a major Vietnamese city. Others come from forests surrounding the Mekong River.
  • Malay kratom

From its name, this obviously refers to kratom gotten from the forests of Malaysia. The Super Green Malay is the most popular strain from this category.
  • Elephant kratom

Unlike other strains of kratom named after their location, Elephant Kratom is named after a prominent feature of the plant: its massive drooping leaves, which resemble an elephant’s ears. Such plants are scarce and are only found deep in the Sumatra island in Indonesia.
  • Dragon

Dragon is a Thailand strain of kratom but it is more affordable than the usual Thai kratom. Price asides, it is a high-quality kratom with a much sought-after coffee-like experience.
  • Maeng Da

Maeng Da is a very ancient strain that originates from Thailand. Maeng Da, in the local language, is slang that means pimp grade. It is used to describe any product (kratom or otherwise) that is of very high quality. The distinctive feature of Maeng Da kratom is how it is cultivated, which is through a process called grafting. Grafting is a common agricultural process of growing the part of one plant in another. Because of this process, the effects of Maeng Da kratom are more pronounced.
  • Bentuangie

This is one of the rarest kratom strains. It is so named because of the unique method by which it is produced: fermentation of the leaves. It is a new kratom strain that has quickly ascended the ladder of kratom excellence.
